    Description

THE SPANISH ARMADA CHESS SETSHIPS AS PAWNS
    SPANISH vs. ENGLISH FORCES
HAND CRAFTED IN CASTING STONE WITH ANTIQUE FINISH
    OUR UNIQUE COLLECTOR'S PRODUCTION
    EXTRAORDINARY HISTORIC SET
A true collector's item, this set of hand crafted chessmen commemorates one of the decisive moments in world history:
the English challenge to the greatest maritime fleet of the 19th century, the Spanish Armada. This set features select figures from that momentous battle, including:King Phillip II and his queen, Anne "of Austria", with the Duke of Medina ( one bishop) commanding the Armada.
On the English side stands Lord Howard of Effingham commanding as king beside Queen Elizabeth I, aided by Sir Walter (one bishop). Each set of royalty is flanked on the other side by an actual Bishop; and knights and differently styled castles fill out the array of the kingdom.
Most exceptional here are the pawns, the soul of this game, who rush out into the front lines on floating feet -- the fleet itself establishing the all-powerful maritime dominance, at that crucial moment in the 16th century.
Note that all chessmen including the pawns are styled differently on the two sides, representing the Spanish and English
    in every aspect.
    WHAT HAPPENED
The decisive battle took place off the coast of Holland, as 22 great Spanish warships accompanied by 108 merchant ships sailed to England, intent on overthrowing the crown. They were met at sea by 34 smaller English warships and 163 armed merchant ships. A terrible battle ensued, leaving the Spanish with 61 lost or scuttled ships and some 20,000 dead. The English side, with some 8 ships lost and 8,000 dead, arose the undisputed victors, staunch defenders of their sovereign crown and rulers of the 7 seas.
